Radial Nerve Palsy Brace (2021)
Short story time…
In 2021, I broke my right arm, requiring a surgery that fixed a metal plate to my bone. Post-surgery, I was met with a nerve problem in my right arm that prevented me from using my right hand.
Being a creative, my right hand was the primary tool for making and not being able to use it caused me a great deal of difficulty emotional difficulty. The current designs and medical tools did notprovide me the ability to work in the way I needed.
This led me to design my own prosthesis that equipped me with the ability to use my right hand. This design and making was archived and captured as a process during my recovery period.
The problem…
The nerve that supports the raising of the wrist and the extension of the fingers was damaged, preventing me from utilising my hand. No holding cups or spoons, no turning door handles, no drawing, no making.
I had to switch from being right handed to left handed.
A maker makes! The design of my temporary new prosthesis
these were the variety of braces used during recovery…
